Baked Macaroni & Cheese

This recipe is a copycat recipe for K&W Cafeteria’s mac and cheese that originated in North Carolina.

Boil the macaroni in salted water until just before al dente.

Grate 3 cups of cheddar cheese.

In a large mixing bowl, mix together cheeses, sour cream, egg, mustard, salt, and pepper.

When the macaroni is cooked, drain thoroughly and then fold into the cheese mixture.

Grease a baking dish and evenly pour in the macaroni and cheese.

Top with the rest of the shredded cheddar cheese.

Bake until bubbly and the cheese is melted. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Tip

While pre-shredded cheese is convenient it is usually coated in a starch that affects the meltability so using cheese grated from a block is recommended for this recipe.
